Steak Udon Noodles

Ingredients:

For the Steak

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon mirin (Japanese sweet rice wine)

  • 1 tablespoon sake (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

For the Noodles and Sauce

  • 14 oz fresh or frozen udon noodles

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce

  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

  • 1 tablespoon mirin

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/4 cup water or beef broth

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For the Garnish

  • Sesame seeds

  • Chopped green onions

  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Steak:

    • In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake (if using), sesame oil, sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger.

    • Add the thinly sliced steak to the marinade, tossing to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours for better flavor.

  2. Cook the Udon Noodles:

    • Cook the udon noodles according to the package instructions. If using fresh or frozen udon, typically you’ll need to boil them for 1-2 minutes until just tender.

    • Drain and set aside.

  3. Cook the Steak:

    • Add the marinated steak slices in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until the steak is browned and cooked through. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.

  4. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In the same skillet, add soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, mirin, sugar, and water or beef broth. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer.

  5. Combine Everything:

    • Add the cooked udon noodles, stir-fried vegetables, and cooked steak back to the skillet. Toss everything together to coat evenly with the sauce.

    • Drizzle with sesame oil and continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes until everything is heated through.

  6. Serve:

    • Divide the steak udon noodles among serving bowls.

    • Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, and red pepper flakes if desired.
